Águeda

Location

Located in the interior and almost in the centre of the lozenge formed by four capitals of district (Aveiro, Oporto, Viseu and Coimbra), Águeda is the biggest concelho of the district of Aveiro with 336 squared km in its 20 freguesias with around 50 thousand inhabitants. Origins

Águeda goes back to 370 years B. C.. Recaptured to the Moors in 739 it became the head of a county, not receiving its own foral. Dom Manuel includes it in the foral granted the Aveiro, in 1515. The current Concelho of Águeda came to being like many others, of the big liberal administrative reform, aiding the continuous political, social and economical
struggles with the extinction of many small ancient concelhos. It was created by a decree of 6 November 1836, but it already existed since 23 October 1834, so it was then that the first Chamber took the office, being its president Joaquim Ignácio de Lima Meirelles.
